Distribution of the cardiotoxin pavettamine in the coffee family (Rubiaceae) and its significance for gousiekte, a fatal poisoning of ruminants.
Gousiekte, a cardiac syndrome of ruminants in southern Africa, is caused by the ingestion of plants containing the polyamine pavettamine. All the six known gousiekte-causing plants are members of the Rubiaceae or coffee family and house endosymbiotic Burkholderia bacteria in their leaves. It was therefore hypothesized that these bacteria could be involved in the production of the toxin. The pav...
متن کاملAntimicrobial activity of some Sri Lankan Rubiaceae and Meliaceae.
Ninety solvent extracts (n-hexane, dichloromethane and methanol) obtained from the leaves, bark and stem of 13 Sri Lankan Rubiaceae and two Sri Lankan Meliaceae plants have been screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities. Morinda tinctoria, Mussaenda frondosa, Psychotria gardneri and Psychotria stenophylla displayed the widest spectrum of antibacterial activity.
متن کامل13C-NMR Spectral Data of Alkaloids Isolated from Psychotria Species (Rubiaceae).
The genus Psychotria (Rubiaceae) comprises more than 2000 species, mainly found in tropical and subtropical forests. Several studies have been conducted concerning their chemical compositions, showing that this genus is a potential source of alkaloids. At least 70 indole alkaloids have been identified from this genus so far. This review aimed to compile 13C-NMR data of alkaloids isolated from t...
متن کاملDevelopment and structure of bacterial leaf nodules in Psychotria bacteriophila Val. (Rubiaceae).
The development and mature structure of bacterial leaf nodules in Psychotria bacteriophila were studied by using light and electron microscopy. Bacteria in mucilage surrounding the shoot apex pass through certain stomates in leaf primordia into the substomatal chamber. These chambers enlarge and become nodules as the yound leaves grow out of the apical region. Surrounding mesophyll cells grow i...
